INTRODUCTION
It is true that our definition of freedom lies in our physical bodies being free but not our minds, and that is where our slavery is today. The story behind this book began during my primary school years and my first year in high school. I was often teased for my dark complexion. I was called names such as “Mnyamane, Darkie, Blacky, Kiwi (The shoe polish)” and many other names which were a constant reminder of how “black” I was.
I was laughed at when taking pictures, even worse when getting a wrong answer in class, only because I am of a dark complexion. On the other side of the story, there are songs, videos, pictures that promote “Ama-Yellow-Bone” (light complexion skin). Many young people are following that trend, with most using beauty products to enlighten their complexion in order to fit into that “perfect” skin tone perceived acceptable to society. This reality gave birth to this book: YOUNG, BLACK and POWERFUL.
